A January 2017 update of the WorldCat Discovery roadmap is available on the WorldCat Discovery Community Center. Consult this document to see what’s next for WorldCat Discovery. Plans for February – March 2017 include adding temporary items to course reserves, support for transferring course reserves data from WorldCat Local and more accurate links to e-resources using the WorldCat knowledge base.

Include Request ID with problem reports

When reporting an issue with WorldCat Discovery, it is extremely helpful to include the Request ID. The Request ID is found at the bottom of the screen on which the issue occurred. Including this information allows us to directly trace what happened on the particular request we are troubleshooting.

New features and enhancements

Record for most recent, locally-held edition now displays in search results

When multiple editions of an item are available, the most recent, locally-held edition now displays in search results. Users can choose to view additional editions as needed. This change from displaying the record with the most WorldCat holdings is in response to user feedback about their preferences for finding editions.

Learn more about our approach to clustering, the process that pulls similar editions and formats into a group or cluster.

The former approach to surfacing items with multiple editions was:

Surface items with multiple editions

Now, the record that displays represents more recent publications available from your library:

Chosing most recent item

This change is illustrated below for results from the search “ideals varieties and algorithms.” As you can see, this library owns three copies. There is an older edition with many holdings attached to its WorldCat record and a more recent edition with fewer holdings attached to the WorldCat record.

With this month’s change, the more recent 2007 edition displays to users
